Maybe you thought coming to Krakow over spring break would be a good idea, or maybe you accidentally booked the weekend of the second largest holiday in Poland, and are now panicking about what to do when everything is closed! Well, don’t worry- there is plenty to do in Krakow even if some things have closed down for the day. And there are several events that only happen once a year around the Easter Holiday itself!
First and foremost- Krakow Explorers Free Walking Tours will operate over the Easter Holiday with a completely normal schedule. So you’ve got loads of options for squeezing in a tour over the long holiday weekend- even on Easter Sunday. You can book onto one of our tours here at krakowexplorers.com. We’ll let you figure out where you want to place the walking tours on your itinerary. But let’s go over some of the very special events that happen in Krakow this time of year.
What to do in Krakow over the Easter Holidays?
Palm Sunday: Head to the Main Market Square on the afternoon of Palm Sunday and you’ll find a competition of Easter Palms. These are handmade according to local tradition- and some are much bigger than you would think!
The Easter Market: Any day over the Easter Holiday the Easter Market will be open for you. Featuring many different stalls you’ll find everything from traditional Polish market food to handmade goods, and Easter decorations. It’s like you’re at the Christmas market- but it’ll be warm and sunny hopefully!
Emaus Festival: The Monday after Easter join the crowds and go to the Emaus Fair. This year it’s being held on the Błonia Meadows instead of its traditional place in the neighborhood of Salwator. But for you, a tourist, that makes it even easier to get to! Go get some candy and cakes, and anything else that catches your eye. This is what’s known as an Indulgence Festival.
Rękawka: One of my favorite days of the year, at one of my favorite locations in Krakow. Head up to the Krakus Mound and back into medieval times to see what life was like in Krakow hundreds of years ago- battlefield and all!
Śmigus-dyngus: Watch out on Easter Monday! Water could hit you from any direction! This holiday doesn’t have a specific location- but its worth warning you about. Teenagers, and actually many adults, will come prepared with water-guns ready to spray- because this date is all about drenching those you care most about. But also- of course the unsuspecting tourist or two.
@emilysguidetokrakow Never assume you can outsmart someone on Smigus-Dyngus. Someone is always waiting around the corner! Gone are the days when they’d throw women in the river! We’ve got an equal chance to fight but we need to make sure we’re prepared! Happy Śmigus-Dyngus everyone aka the day after Easter in Poland when everyone throws water on each other! #Krakow #poland #travel #polishtradition #smigusdyngus
