Krakow isn’t known for any huge fountains like the Trevi, but there are a few spots around the city where when the weather gets warm the water starts to flow, and the best example is at Plac Szczepanski.
Plac Szczepanski or Szczepanski Square in Krakow is located in the Old Town just behind the Main Market Square. It’s a beautiful area with many bars and restaurants spilling out onto the street; and in summer it features beautiful colorful fountains that can not only help you cool off on a hot day in Krakow- but entertain your kids for hours.
The square itself was established in the 1800s when Krakow went through a lot of urban revitalization. The city wanted to create more open spaces, and so a lot of medieval buildings were destroyed, to create these lovely areas we still use today. Eventually it was just used as a parking lot- but in 2010 it was totally redone to make it one of the most beautiful places in Krakow. [Remember, the Main Square can be very touristy so getting somewhere like Plac Szczepanski or even the Maly Rynek can be a nice break from the crowds- even though they are only a couple seconds walk away].
During the summer months, the fountains on Plac Szczepanski shoot water straight up from the ground and from the main majestic pool. Providing a space just two minutes walking from the Main Market Square of Krakow to find some relief from the heat. On a hot summer day, don’t expect to be the only person going to Szczepanski Square to splash in the fountains water for a moment- it’s usually filled with kids and dogs after the same thing.
Of course, even on a more mild day, the fountain provides a beautiful, and picturesque backdrop for a stroll through the square, a moments break to rest on a bench, or as a backdrop to one of the many cafes and restaurants around it as well.
Don’t forget- at night it even lights up! Now all they need to do is add some corresponding music, and it will be like we are in Disneyland.
